Dungeon World RPG

The download page of the official Dungeon World site has some useful free documents:

  • Play kit: Includes character sheets, reference sheets, and GM sheets. Everything you need to play. Designed by Stefan Grambart, these are in my favorite “classic/original” style of playbook character sheets. Includes The Barbarian, The Bard, The Cleric (and spells), The Druid, The Fighter, The Immolator, The Paladin, The Ranger, The Thief, and The Wizard (with spells); plus Basic & Special Moves, a GM sheet, and a Fronts template.
  • The Dungeon World Guide: A fan-made guide to learning Dungeon World by Eon Fontes-May and Sean Dunstan. An outstanding resource, this is what I recommend to new players before they even read the rules, as it conveys the spirit of what makes DW great, and gets us excited to play.
  • World of Dungeons: What if Dungeon World was the latest edition of a game that’s existed since 1979? The first edition would have looked something like World of Dungeons. Designed by John Harper as a backer goal for the DW Kickstarter campaign in 2012.

License to hack and slash. The text of Dungeon World is released under a Creative Commons Attribution license. You can make, distribute, and even sell anything you like based on Dungeon World, as long as you credit the authors. Here’s the complete Github repository from which the authors made their game/book.

“This isn’t ‘Nam, Smokey. There are rules.” Since the license is so open, one can print and re-post the rules in whatever format desired. My favorite online version of the complete ruleset is The Dungeon World Gazetteer. Yochai Gal likes The Dungeon World HTML SRD.

Let’s get into character. The Big List of Dungeon World Playbooks. 406 playbooks and counting, from The Abjurer to The Xeno. Here’s where you can grab a character sheet, find some new classes, or get inspired. The ones that are premium (for pay) generally have a preview, but many are free; just click the “Get” button.

Down the rabbit hole. My favorite go-to resource for questions, answers, discussion, and ideas is the Dungeon World sub-reddit. There are kind, knowledgeable, creative people there. Also a vast array of the best resources in the sidebar: Must Reads for New Players, Examples, a Lexicon, FAQ, the DW Syllabus, Actual Plays, Adventures, Publications, Blogs, and much more. There are adjacent communities in Reddit for PbtA (Powered by the Apocalypse), OSR, RPG, RPG Design, and (sigh) Dungeons & Dragons.
